LBC’s History

In 1964, the Landmark Baptist Church was formed under the direction of Pastor Ellis Sharp. The first meeting place was a building where the Mechanicsville Post Office now stands. The name “Landmark” was chosen because both church locations have been on historic landmarks. We have been at our present location since 1965, and our properties have been through several different building stages.

In August of 1973, Dr. Jim Sumpter became the pastor at Landmark. Under his leadership, the church took great strides in serving the Lord teaching and discipling through the Scripture, reaching the lost through a number of ministries, building three buildings on over forty acres of property, establishing Landmark Christian School, and becoming a stronghold for missions and evangelistic work around the world. Over the years, the people of Landmark have had a part in seeing thousands of souls influenced for Christ.

In 2006, Dr. Jim Sumpter became a Pastor Emeritus of Landmark Baptist Church, and his son Don Sumpter accepted the Senior Pastor position. Dr. Jim Sumpter now serves as Pastor Emeritus of Landmark and speaks in missions and evangelistic conferences in churches throughout this region of the country.

Under Pastor Don’s leadership, the church has continued to grow in Christ over the last few years. The church has engaged in several new ministries the newest being Iglesia Bautista Evocacion, a ministry to the Spanish speaking people of the Richmond area.

Landmark is a church that is rich in its history, but we realize that a church is not made of brick and mortar or carpet and pews. The greatest part of our history are the lives of the people that have been changed to bring glory to God. Though we appreciate and savor our past, we press hard into the future to see Christ glorified through the lives of people today.
