Our History

---Landmark Baptist Church

In 1964, the Landmark Baptist Church was formed under the direction of Pastor Ellis Sharp. The first meeting place was a building where the Mechanicsville Post Office now stands. The name “Landmark” was chosen because both church locations have been on historic landmarks. We have been at our present location since 1965, while our property has been through several different building stages.

In August of 1973, Dr. Jim Sumpter became the pastor at Landmark. During this time, the church took great strides in serving the Lord, spreading the Gospel, building three buildings on over forty acres of property, establishing Landmark Christian School, and becoming a stronghold for missions and evangelistic work around the world. Over the years, the people of Landmark have had a part in seeing thousands of souls influenced for Christ.

In 2006, Dr. Jim Sumpter became a Pastor Emeritus of Landmark Baptist Church, and his son Don Sumpter accepted the senior pastor position.

Over the last decade, the church has continued to grow in Christ.

In 2020, Landmark called James Sumpter as its senior pastor. James has been part of our staff since 2009 and has served in a variety of roles.
Landmark is a church that is rich in its history, but we realize that a church is not made of brick, mortar, carpet, and pews. The greatest part of our history are the lives of the people that have been changed to bring glory to God.

We appreciate and savor our past, but press hard into the future to see Christ glorified in the lives of people today.
