Who Knows? - Ecclesiastes 8:1-17 - Wednesday Evening Bible Study

Ecclesiastes: Life Under the Sun

“Who knows?” This is a rhetorical question asked to convey that the speaker neither knows the answer nor who might know the answer. We often asked this when we are perplexed, frustrated, or simply surprised by the “random” events and issues of life. In Ecclesiastes 8, the Preacher begins verse 1 by asking this very thing. He has been giving us thoughts of wisdom as he continues to explain his observations of life under the sun. His conclusion has become clear that there is no meaning or purpose found in a life solely based in this earth, but he also makes it clear that there is some order to this chaos. In chapter 8, he is surrendering his wisdom to the simple question, “Who knows?” He confronts a few thoughts or questions that have probably plagued us all at some point. The chapter gives us a series of his practical experiences, observations, and issues of life that are answered with some general thoughts of wisdom.

Scripture References: Ecclesiastes 7:29, Ecclesiastes 7:13, Ecclesiastes 7:20, 2 Peter 3:9-10, Ecclesiastes 8:1-17, Hebrews 11:1, Acts 4:19, Romans 13:1-14

From Series: "Ecclesiastes: Life Under the Sun"

We want to examine and consider life under the sun and realize that must point to someone beyond it: Jesus Christ.
