Lesson 35 - The Church Becomes Christ's Body on Earth - Mid Week Prayer Service 7-14-2021
The Church - Ekklésia The word that Jesus used that is translated as “church” comes from a compound word from the Greek words: ek, "out from and to" and kaléō, "to call". When Jesus and the early Christians referred to the church, they were using a very specific term. It referred to the people that were “called out from the life and world and to God.” It makes perfect sense when you think about how Jesus called His disciples. He called each of them to “follow” him as they were called out from the whole of society and life as they knew it. Jesus called them to new lives through the power of the Gospel. His intentions for the church are exactly the same. It is so important to think of the church the way that Jesus thought of the church. In our society, the word “church” has been domesticated and commercialized. We are quick to think of a building, organization, program, plan, or denomination. When Jesus used the word church, He was referring to a people!
