An interlude is a welcome break during some physically or mentally demanding activity. During work, it may be a moment for coffee or lunch. During music, it is a short composition that transitions from what longer part to another. During a drama or a movie, it is music or entertainment between acts. It is a type of hinge between major parts. It can give an opportunity to reset or reflect on what has been done or seen. Here in the book of Judges, the writer has given us some breathing space during a part of the book that has been intense and draining. There are still things that are happening. We read of two of the minor judges, continued rebellion, and then a brief phase of repentance from the Israelites. However, it is the first time since Judges 3 that the storyline is not rapidly advancing. Rather than rush into the next major judge (like pressing fast forward to the next action scene) let's sit this "intermission" and reflect on what we have learned and what sadly continues to happen in God's people.
