Judges 19-21 - Moral Chaos: When People Rule Without God - Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting

A Study of Judges

The final three chapters of the book of Judges tell the unfolding of a particular circumstance in Israel’s history. Frankly, it is awful! We know from 20:28 that these events occurred early after Israel inhabits the Promised Land (probably just after the death of Joshua). The individual and cooperate acts of God’s chosen people show that the vileness of sin overwhelms when there is no personal relationship with Him. The writer gives us this appendix to the book to help us understand just how wicked the people of Israel were from the beginning. What unfolds in the rest of the book is so distasteful that the commentator F.B. Meyer recommended not reading it: “It will be sufficient to ponder these words, which occur four times in the book, without reading further in this terrible chapter, which shows the depths of the depravity to which may sink apart from the grace of God.” I strongly disagree with Mr. Meyer as all Scripture is given by God for our learning, but his sentiment is understandable.

Scripture References: Judges 20:1-48, Judges 19:1-30, Judges 21:1-25
