Last week we started a study of the final vision of Daniel which breaks up as follows:
Chapter 10 – The Setting – When/how the vision came
Chapter 11 – The Vision – The content and prophecy
Chapter 12 – Conclusion – The end and purpose of the vision
Last week, we saw the setting which included an angel coming from God to give Daniel the vision. However, we learn that this angel is met with supernatural resistance from a fallen angel who evidently exerted power of Persia. Now, Daniel 11 records the actual vision for us.
This is a unique vision for us to study as most of its fulfilment is in past events from our perspective but was still future for Daniel. History bears out the accuracy of this prophecy. In fact, it is so accurate that many “scholars” feel it was added and recorded after the events happen. This view would weaken our confidence in the book and render all of Daniel 10 as fiction.
While we could begin to examine every minute detail, as with much prophecy writing, it is probably most helpful to view this from “30,000 feet” as we look for understanding. The purpose of most prophecy or apocalyptic literature is to compel God’s people to present action. The vision of Daniel 11 was given so that he might know something of the future and how followers of God ought to live right now in light of that future.
