The Person of Christ Lesson 30 - THE IMAGE OF GOD RESTORED IN JESUS - Wed Prayer Service
We have all heard the phrase that Jesus is “fully God and fully man”. What we mean by this is that Jesus is not some sort of hybrid creature or celestial being. This truth is vitally important to our understanding of Jesus and the Gospel. How could it be possible to be fully God and fully man? If even part of Jesus was God, wouldn’t that mean He is not a human in the sense that we are human? Mind boggling right? Early in church history and doctrine established the importance of the incarnation of Jesus. In fact, in 451 A.D. some early church Christians gathered in the city of Chalcedon to try to form into a doctrine or formal teaching what they believed about Jesus being God. They formed what is known as the Chalcedonean Creed which has served as a common definition or teaching on the person of Christ since then. It is helpful as it states what the Bible teaches: 1. Jesus has two natures – God and man. 2. Each nature is full and complete – He is fully God and fully man. 3. Each nature remains distinct. 4. Jesus is only one person. 5. Things that are true of only one nature are nonetheless true of the person of Christ. Why is it so important to establish that Jesus took the form of man fully? It’s all about image! It’s about what God created us to be in the beginning, what we will be in the end, and how God accomplishes that in Himself.
