Micah's Idolatry: False Religion To The True God - Judges 17-18 Midweek Prayer Meeting
We have finished the portion of the book of Judges that includes details of God’s continued merciful deliverance of Israel through various individuals. It culminated with Samson who was the judge that presented Israel with a mirror image of itself. Though we have finished with the judges, there are five chapters of the book left. What are they about? Essentially, there are two “appendix” sections at the end of book. Like other portions of Judges, they are not in chronological order. In fact, it is possible that the events found in Judges 17-18 happened while Joshua was still alive. What we are told in the story of Micah and his idols is meant to be an additional story that gives us insight into the condition of Israel toward their relationship with God. It is an odd timeline of details, but reveals much of the danger of idolatry and man driven religion. Key Verse: Judges 17:6 “In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes.” – The key to properly understanding the chaos in the passage is that even though God had given a Law, instruction, and expectation, everyone did what was right in their own eyes.
