Lesson 36 – How God Moved the Gospel Worldwide - Midweek Prayer Meeting 7-28-2021
In the first days after Pentecost, it seems the church was able to meet and fellowship openly. Most of those who would be considered part of Christ’s church were still in Jerusalem. Acts 2:46 and 5:42 tell us that they met in the temple and from house-to-house fellowshipping and preaching about Jesus. As they preached, some of the same men who crucified Jesus began to take notice. They called in some of the disciples to question them, and Stephen preached to them a great sermon of the Gospel. In anger, they mobbed Stephen and killed him in a cruel and horrific way. Acts 8:1 says this moment marked the start of serious persecution against the church. Because of the great persecution, the Christians of the early church were scattered quickly to the regions surrounding Jerusalem including Judea and Samaria. Philip went to Samaria and preached Jesus there and many people were saved and transformed by God. God used the hardships of His people to spread the message of the Gospel to others including the Samaritans who were considered a disgrace in the eyes of the other Jews. Today, God’s mission for the church remains unchanged. We are challenged to carry the Gospel around the world, and sometimes, God uses hardships to give us unique opportunities to reach others for Him.
